Absorption: caffeine does not block creatine
This part is settled. In the 1996 study that started the debate (Vandenberghe et al., Leuven), men took creatine with or without caffeine for six days, and muscle biopsies showed the same rise in muscle creatine in both groups. Caffeine had no effect on uptake. Every study since has agreed. You can stir creatine into coffee, take it with a pre-workout, or drink an energy drink an hour later; the creatine still gets where it's going.
Performance: the two Belgian studies and what followed
The same 1996 study found something odd. Creatine alone improved muscular endurance on a knee-extension test; creatine plus 5 mg/kg of caffeine every day (about 350 mg, or 3–4 strong coffees, for a 70 kg man) did not. Absorption was fine; the benefit was gone. A 2002 follow-up (Hespel et al.) offered a mechanism: creatine shortened muscle relaxation time, daily caffeine lengthened it, and together they cancelled. Both studies were small (nine and ten men) and used daily caffeine for a week, not a single pre-workout dose.

Read together, the pattern is: a single caffeine dose before training doesn't interfere and may add to creatine's effect; very high daily caffeine (5 mg/kg, every day) might blunt it, and even that hasn't replicated. A person drinking two cups of coffee a day (150–200 mg) is nowhere near the dose in the two negative studies.
The real issue: stomach upset during loading
The one consistent finding is digestive. When people load creatine (20–25 g/day) and take caffeine at the same time, about 30% report stomach discomfort, compared with almost none on creatine alone. In the 2016 Trexler trial the discomfort showed up only with caffeine powder, not with coffee delivering the same caffeine dose, which suggests it's the concentrated hit of both on an empty stomach rather than an interaction. Practical fixes:

- Take creatine with a meal, and coffee whenever you like. They don't need to be together; creatine timing barely matters.
- If you use a pre-workout that contains both, that's a maintenance dose of creatine with 150–300 mg caffeine, well below the doses that caused trouble, and fine for most people.
Putting creatine in hot coffee
Creatine monohydrate slowly converts to inactive creatinine in liquid, faster when hot and acidic. But "slowly" means hours to days, not minutes. Stirred into a hot coffee and drunk within 10–15 minutes, the loss is negligible. What you shouldn't do is mix a week's worth into a jug and leave it in the fridge. Creatine also dissolves better in warm liquid, so coffee is one of the easier ways to take it without the gritty bottom.
Dehydration and cramps
The old warning that caffeine dehydrates and creatine "needs water" so the two shouldn't mix has no support. Habitual coffee drinkers show no net fluid loss from coffee, and the creatine cramping story was tested directly in college football players (Greenwood 2003): creatine users had fewer cramps and injuries, not more. Can I take creatine with coffee?

Does caffeine cancel creatine?

Can I take creatine with pre-workout?
