What creatine does to the scale
Creatine is osmotically active: when muscle stores fill up, they pull water in with them. The typical gain is 1–2% of body weight, or about 2–5 lb, mostly in the first one to two weeks (faster with a loading phase, slower without). Then it stops. That water is intracellular, inside the muscle fibre, which is the opposite of the puffy, under-the-skin water that hides definition. Fuller muscle cells look bigger and harder, not softer.
On a cut, this means one honest adjustment: expect the scale to stall or tick up for the first two weeks, then resume dropping at the rate your deficit sets. If you start creatine and a diet on the same day, the water gain can mask a real 2–3 lb of fat loss and convince you the diet isn't working. Either start creatine two weeks before the cut, or accept the plateau and judge by the trend from week three.
Does creatine help fat loss?
Slightly, and indirectly. Creatine doesn't burn fat. What it does is let you keep training hard in a deficit, and the extra work and the retained muscle add up:

Those are modest numbers, and they come from people training with weights, not from creatine alone. But the direction is consistent, and it runs against the idea that creatine "makes you fat." The more important effect on a cut is the one that's harder to put in a table: creatine preserves strength and lean mass in a deficit. A 2002 trial (Ziegenfuss) that put athletes on a low-calorie diet found the creatine group held fat-free mass and lost as much fat as placebo, while the placebo group lost more muscle. Keeping the muscle keeps your resting metabolism up and keeps the physique you're cutting to reveal.
How to dose creatine on a cut
- Skip the loading phase. Loading (20–25 g/day) puts on the water weight in five days instead of three weeks and is the one protocol that causes real stomach bloating. On a diet, neither is welcome. Take 3–5 g/day and let saturation happen over 3–4 weeks. The loading calculator shows your no-load saturation date.
- Use body-weight dosing. 0.03 g/kg is 2.5 g for a 180-lb person and 3.5 g at 250 lb. The dosage calculator does the math and rounds to scoops.
- Take it with a meal. Carbs and protein improve uptake a little, and it's easier on the stomach. Timing relative to training barely matters.
- Drink normally, plus a glass. The extra water inside muscle has to come from somewhere; the water calculator adds about 0.35 L per dose. Cutting on a low-carb diet already drops water, so don't compound it.
- Don't cycle. There's no reason to stop and restart; every restart repeats the water gain and the two-week scale stall.
When to stop creatine before a weigh-in
This is the one legitimate reason to pause. If you compete in a weight class (powerlifting, wrestling, MMA, rowing, boxing) and you're within a couple of kilos of the limit, the 1–2 kg of creatine water is a problem. Two options:
- Stop 5–7 days out. Roughly half the water weight comes off in the first week, the rest over 3–4 weeks. You keep most of the strength benefit for a week or so after stopping because muscle stores drain slowly. Resume after weigh-in.
- Keep it and water-cut the difference. If weigh-in is 24+ hours before competition, a small water cut and rehydration is often preferred over giving up the creatine, because you compete with full stores.
For a photoshoot or bodybuilding stage, most coaches keep creatine right through peak week: intracellular water is the fullness you want. Some drop it in the last 3–5 days as part of a broader water manipulation; that's a peaking choice, not a health one.
Creatine on a low-carb or keto cut
Creatine works fine without carbs; the uptake boost from insulin is small. What changes is water: keto drops glycogen and the 3–4 g of water stored with each gram of it, so people on low-carb diets sometimes think creatine "stopped working" because the scale fell. It didn't; stores are still full. Keep the dose the same and pay attention to sodium and fluids, since both diets and creatine shift water.
